Intimate relationships can bring lots of joy to our lives, but they often come with some challenges. At times, it may be helpful for a couple to use therapy to learn how to manage these relationship problems. Understanding unhealthy relationship patterns is the first step in learning how to decrease the frequency of negative interactions with your partner while increasing the positive aspects of your relationship.

What to expect the first session:

 

The first session of couples therapy is a joint session where we will have the opportunity to meet each other and discuss the issues that brought you to therapy. We will review my office policies, limits of confidentiality, and treatment consent forms.

The next two sessions will be individual sessions with each partner of the couple. This will give me a chance to gather more individual history about each person and their views of the issues that exist in the relationship.

The fourth and subsequent sessions will be joint sessions. We will explore the patterns of your relationship and identify how these patterns can be transformed to improve the overall quality of your relationship. I will introduce effective communication strategies, self-care skills and positive coping skills. We will also explore the way significant early relationships may be influencing your current relationship.
